Unfamiliar Texts

14/6/19

Expelled: The girl had behavioral problems so she got expelled.

Persuaded: I persuaded my friend to come to the party with me.

Transferred: I did so good in my reading test that I got transferred into a higher group.

Atmosphere: The atmosphere was so thick with tension you could cut it with a knife.

Armament: the government gave the equipment the military needed for armament.

Pouting: The girl knew pouting would help her to get her way.

Apprentices: the apprentice got fired because he couldn’t do his job right.

Cavalier: the man made everyone hate him because of his cavalier attitude.

Holy Orders: I have a friend who is part of the holy orders.

Friendly: kind and pleasant. I think of people who come and talk to you when you have no friends or something like that.

Persuasion: the action or process of persuading someone or of being persuaded to do or believe something. I think of an essay or when you are in court and you have to convince someone else of something like trying to convince your parents that you are not crazy.

I think this story might be about someone persuading someone else to do something in a friendly manner, maybe about the Holy Order? Because that is what the words mean and I got told to look at the vocab words from before and the holy order is really the only thing you can persuade someone on.

Write down 6 word you can connect to the word school
Class

18/6/19

My first impression of this extract is that it was not what I expected for it to be and that the ending was surprising but well done because you expected it to end in a different way, you expect him to be ok after he gets kicked out or that he manages to walk away from the crash.

I was incorrect when I predicted that this would be about someone persuading someone else to do something in a friendly manner about the holy order. I think this is because I took the meaning to literal.

One thing that surprised me about the story was that the kid died in the end and that there was no dialog in the story.

Who do you think the intended audience is?
I think that the intended audience is secondary school students because in the bio of the author/text it says “the intended audience is secondary school students”

I think the statement Alan’s parents have failed to teach him the right way to live because the way they were portrayed on the story were pushovers and that you could easily get them to go your way and they would let Alan do what he wants were as in the “real world” it doesn’t work like that you have to follow rules and you can’t do what you like.

19/6/19

I think we start to see a point in change in paragraph 3 of the story

The change is when we start to hear all the things Alan is doing in class and with his Mini

The point of change helps us to understand the purpose of this writing because it shows that being charming and being able to talk your way out of things sometimes is not going to help you if someone really wants to get rid of you.

Why do you think the title of this story is appropriate?
It is appropriate because there is some friendly persuasion done by people so it sort of tells you what is going to happen without spoiling the story.

How does this relate to the author's attitude towards the characters in his story?
I don’t really know it could be he made these characters friendly and have people easily persuaded just so he could have “Friendly Persuasion” as his title

Write a different title for this story and explain why you gave the story this title.
My new title is “The Missfit” because that is kind of what Alan is he doesn't do his work and distracts others with his attitude so I think it is fitting.

How does the title and the point of change get the authors point across to the reader?
I don’t really know it could be that it shows that friendly persuasion can only get you so far.

Point out one metaphor and describe its significance
“he had gathered a small following of apprentice Romeos” this is significant because it shows what his friends were like and what he was teaching them to be.

Find two examples of euphemism from the story
Example 1: “Alan and his Mini were unrecognizable” we are being told that Alan is dead, burnt to a crisp and his Mini is a wreck as well.

Example 2: “he and his Mini were pointed to the direction of the gate” this is saying he was expelled.

Give an example of listing from paragraphs two to four
“Slim, tanned, back-haired and hazel-eyed, Alan was totally charming and totally irresponsible”

The author, David Hill, wanted to highlight the issue of people getting their way because of their looks. Because that is not how life works you need to work to get what you need. He does this be using the technique of listing when he writes “Slim, tanned, back-haired and hazel-eyed, Alan was totally charming and totally irresponsible” this is effective because it paints a picture of what the main character Alan is like. Another technique the author uses is euphemism, for example when he says “he and his mini were pointed in the direction of the front gate” this means that he was expelled and is used to emphasis the idea that looks can only get you so far if you are a real ratbag people will find a way to get rid of you. This makes us think about other people we have heard of real for fiction that rely on their looks to get through life and it ends up backfiring on them so that we don’t follow in their footsteps. Finally, the author wanted us to remember that actions have consequences because whatever you do has an affect just like in the story when Alan convinces his parents to let him out for a night and he ends up crashing his car and burning to a crisp.

you can read the poems here
What do these poems suggest about the way we should approach poetry? What is one specific example (evidence from the text)?
these say that we shouldn't be scared about poems and just enjoy them like you would a good meal and don't be proper when you are reading just enjoy it the line "don't be polite Bite in" from the first poem shows this

Choose one poem and create a collage which represents it visually. (I am doing the second one eating poetry)

You can read the poem and the questions here

What are your first impressions on this poem?
I liked it, it was a nice little poem but I didn’t really understand what she meant by “you are twelve teeth old”

Write down any words you didn’t know and what they mean
Fossick: rummage; search.
Alveolus: the bony socket for the root of a tooth.
Marina: a specially designed harbour with moorings for pleasure yachts and small boats.

1/7/19

this is carrying on from the last post with the same poem as before that you can see with the questions here

What is your interpretation of the stanza:
Suddenly, you’re eleven teeth old
And have grown, like Lazarus,
Younger beneath moonlight.

My interpretation of this stanza is that it is referring to Lazarus from the bible rising from the dead so technically becoming younger.

Identify what line the first point of change is
I think that the line until you keel over in stanza three is were the first point of change is (change in atmosphere)

Identify what line the second point of change is
I think that the lines but only when you are sleeping, do I discover a tooth in stanza 6 is were the second point of change is (change in the poet’s understanding)

Describe the atmosphere in the first three stanzas in the poem
I think the atmosphere is light hearted and happy and very centered around boats but it makes you think of a bright sunny day were you are having a good time and you don’t really want it to end.

Identify two words that contribute to this atmosphere
Fossick, and float

Describe the atmosphere in stanzas 4-6 of the poem
I think that the atmosphere has turned dark and things are going wrong then at the end maybe things are becoming hopeful again.

Identify one phrase that contributes to this atmosphere
Your gums are an ocean of blood

Describe the atmosphere for the last three stanzas of the poem

I think this atmosphere is hopeful and that everything is calm and you have the quiet of night and in the morning everything will be okay again

this is again carrying on from the last post with the same poem as before that you can see with the questions here

Chose three features / techniques and state and example and effect
Direct address
Example: “today you are twelve teeth old”
Effect: makes it feel more personal
Simile
Example: “and have grown like Lazarus younger in the moonlight”
Effect: it puts a picture in you head and help you to visualize something by saying it is like something else
Metaphor
Example: "your gums are an ocean of blood"
Effect: it helps you to visualise
What are the many references to boats and the sea being compared to?
They are being compared to a person and also the tooth

What is the effect of this extended metaphor?
It helps the reader understand that this person really likes boats or that they are like a boat because they keel over like a boat or they just sort of act like a boat maybe I am not really sure

5/7/19
this is again carrying on from the last post with the same poem as before that you can see with the questions here

Give one language feature that the author uses to describe the setting
Listing
Give an example
We fossick for shells, starfish, pipi and paua

The poet's feelings for her child's loss tooth is sadness I guess because in that stanza it is kind of sad and she says as I stroke you your eyes collect water your gums are an ocean of blood this shows that she cares about the child so is a little sad that the kid is sad.

DTE looking at business cards

I like this because it catches your eye and the gold with the marble in the background is a good contrast and it is simple so it is nice to look at.
