what I have learnt this term in Home Ec

This term in home ec we have been looking at nutrition and how this is relevant to me as an individual.

Three key points that I have learnt about are:
the Food Nutritional Guidelines (FNG), these are five key points that outline the basic guidelines that we should add to our food plans for a healthy lifestyle
1. eat a variety of foods from each of the four food groups to get an array of nutrients from protean, carbs and fibre to the smaller ones like calcium and vitamin d.
2. eat enough for growth of activity the nutrients that help with this are iron, calcium and protean for growth and carbs and fibre for activity
3. foods should be prepared with less fat, sugar, salt, this reduces the risk of heart attack, diabetes, strokes, rotten teeth and obesity.
4. partake in 60 min of exercise a day of moderate to high intensity this is so we stay fit and in good shape
5. drink 2 L of water a day this is so we stay hydrated and are able to remove toxins from our body instead of water you can also drink low fat milk of diluted fruit juice.
the second key point I have learnt is how to create a meal plan for the day that follows the FNGs instead of doing what I normally would have in a day.
and the third key point I have learnt this term is that to absorb calcium in to your body you need to have vitamin D which you can only get from the sun.

In the future I will be able to use this information by trying to follow the food nutritional guidelines more in my day to day life.

During the practical lessons we have demonstrated how to cook foods by lowering fat/salts & sugars
examples of how we did this was by using spray oil when we cooked foods in a frying pan instead of pouring oil, using natural sweeteners like honey instead of adding sugar and using low salt ingredients when cooking.

  1. Nice work Rosa!, I really liked how you explained what the Food Nutritional Guidelines are. You could write a little more about how you will use the FNG'S in your day to day life. Are there any more ways you reduced using Fats,Salts and Sugars?
